Signs that your loved one is being emotionally and / or physically abused:

	Frequent arguments or tension between the caregiver and your loved one in care of that caregiver.
	Changes in personality or behavior in the elder.
	Unexplained signs of injury such as bruises, welts, or scars.
	Broken bones, sprains, or dislocations.
	Report of drug overdose or apparent failure to take medication regularly.
	Broken eyeglasses or frames.
	Signs of being restrained, such as carpet-burn-looking marks on wrists.
	A caregiver’s refusal to allow you to see the elder alone.
	Threatening, belittling, or controlling caregiver behavior that you witness.
	Behavior from the elder that mimics dementia, such as rocking, sucking, or mumbling to oneself.
	Unusual weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration.
	Untreated physical problems, such as bed sores.
	Unsanitary living conditions: dirt, bugs, soiled bedding and clothes.
	Being left dirty or unbathed.
	Unsuitable clothing or covering for the weather.
	Unsafe living conditions (no heat or running water; faulty electrical wiring, other fire hazards).
	Significant withdrawals from the elder’s accounts.
	Sudden changes in the elder’s financial condition.
	Items or cash missing from the senior’s household.
	Suspicious changes in wills, power of attorney, titles, and policies.
	Addition of names to the senior’s signature card.
	Unpaid bills or lack of medical care, although the elder has enough money to pay for them.
	Financial activity the senior couldn’t have done, such as an ATM withdrawal when the account holder is bedridden.
	Unnecessary services, goods, or subscriptions.
	Duplicate billings for the same medical service or device.
	Evidence of overmedication or under medication.
	Evidence of inadequate care when bills are paid in full.
	Problems with the care facility: poorly trained, poorly paid, or insufficient staff; crowding; inadequate responses to questions about care.

What do do if you suspect physical and / or emotional abuse from a caregiver:

DO NOT IMMEDIATELY CONFRONT! This is the worst way to resolve any suspicions of elder abuse and neglect. Although you can ask simple, non-confrontational questions, bold accusations at this early stage are extremely difficult to prove in a court of law. Expect the nursing home to deny all allegations and literally make things worse. The best way to determine whether or not your loved one is being abused is to discretely open a case with Interforce International Private Investigations so we can set up undercover surveillance, analyze all the documentation for any suspicious transactions and changes, and interview your loved one privately. 	Your child comes home with unexplained bruises, abrasions, broken bones, black eyes, cuts, or other injuries.
	Your child is unable to focus on an object, lift his / her head, have difficulty breathing.
	Your child becomes excessively clingy, passive, and/or aggressive.
	Your child becomes less talkative, stop communicating almost completely, or display signs of speech disorder.
	Your child complains of headaches or stomachaches that have no medical causes.
	Your child develops extreme fearful behavior, such as nightmares or trouble sleeping.
	Your child may experience pain, itching, bleeding, bruising in the gentile area.
	Your child may has difficulty walking or sitting due to genital or anal pain.
	Your child demonstrates sexual knowledge, curiosity, or behavior, such as seductive behavior towards adults.
	Your child develops uncommon and derogatory sexual vocabulary at a young age.
	Your child is secretive or wants to be alone most of the time.

Signs to watch for from your child's caregiver:

	Offers conflicting or unconvincing explanations for bruises or injuries.
	Offers no explanation for bruises or injuries.
	Describes your child in an extremely negative way.
	Constantly belittles your child.
	Seems indifferent to your child.
	Is apathetic or depressed.
	Abuses drugs or alcohol.
	Starts to behave irrationally.
	Is secretive or isolated, or acts extremely jealous or controlling with family members.
	Seems harsh when it comes to discipline. (Abuse often results from excessive or inappropriate physical discipline.)
